How we started

Since its inception, BYD has provided batteries of smartphone, tablets, laptops and other electronics for global partners such as Apple, Nokia, Dell, Toshiba, Microsoft, Samsung, Motorola and many more.

2000

Powering up

Battery Revolution: BYD becomes one of the world’s largest producers of safe and reliable rechargeable batteries, driving innovation by reinvesting billions of dollars into research and development.

2003

Going all-in

BYD enters the Automotive Industry: In 2003, BYD entered the automotive market and began to apply its battery expertise to the transportation industry. BYD’s unique combination of battery and automotive experience is now revolutionizing every aspect of clean transportation.

2008

Getting noticed

First Plug-in Hybrid, Warren Buffet Investment and Energy Expansion: The F3DM was launched and was the world’s first commercially available mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV). The F3DM could be charged from a regular electrical outlet and run up to 100km on its electric engine, before shifting to its gasoline-powered engine when it ran low on power. This milestone proved that the technology could be implemented at scale. In the same year, a unit of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway purchased a 10% stake in BYD, which investors viewed as a solid endorsement for the rapidly expanding firm. BYD also entered the solar power and energy storage sector.

2011

Plugging in

First mass-produced Electric Vehicle: The BYD e6 became commercially available in 2011, two years after its conceptual debut, as the company’s first all-electric vehicle. The model featured a 82KW battery and a range of up to 400km. Since this first model, BYD has continuously enhanced its electric line-up, and now has several new models available across the globe.

2020

Safety first

BYD launches the Blade Battery: A little over a decade into its foray in the new energy vehicle industry, BYD launched the ultra-reliable and ultra-safe Blade Battery. The Blade Battery reflected BYD’s determination to resolve issues in battery safety, while also redefining safety and engineering standards for the entire industry. The Blade Battery is now featured in all BYD passenger cars, and BYD is also supplying a growing number of other new energy automakers with its proprietary battery technology.
